Here’s a little exercise I like to do in the studio playing with design and layout. I enjoy using various mediums and creative exercises to keep things fresh in my practise.
I recycle old magazines that somehow find their way through my letterbox. Some of the fashion ones have lovely cohesive tones which is helpful for monotone or specific limited colour exercises.
I start with mark-making using charcoal, graphite or any medium, but you can also use any old artwork you no longer care for – it creates something to respond to. I then cut lots of chunks from the magazine pages and randomly start pasting them on without too much thought, just playing. I usually use glue stick but had run out and couldn’t find any in the house or kids desks, so have used Liquatex Gloss Medium as a glue which is fine, but did make the paper bubble a bit.
Later on I use white card with a square shape cut-out to select different compositions within the piece.
